15th century France16 viewsThis is the side that made me want to get this leaf. Sadly, in the pictures you cannot see the detail of the letters. There is tiny whitework in the two line capitals in the paint surrounding the gold that had to have been done with single hair paintbrushes. The size of this piece is demonstrated by the quarter. I need to start making my illuminations a bit smaller.

15th century France19 viewsThis is a page from a Book of Hours on vellum. I loved this little leaf (the size is evident in the other picture) because of the illumination. This side is a bit smudged, but the other side is beautiful. These pictures aren't the greatest, but the best I could do. I should try scanning them at some point.
They wrote the prices of these pieces right on the leaf! I was appalled, but it was in pencil and I was able to erase it without doing much more damage.

Circa 1250 Bible leaf from France.12 viewsThis is the other side of this leaf. I like the simple illumination on this piece and have the feeling that this is the side that will be shown at first. We are thinking of how to frame this so we could show both sides.
There is a part of me that cringes that they took apart these books to sell the pages individually, but the rest of me is joyous that we could afford a bit of history like this. They are our new prized possessions.

Circa 1250 Bible leaf from France.19 viewsGreg and I decided to treat ourselves to a 'paper' gift for our one year anniversary. Technically these are not paper, they are on vellum, but we were willing to make that compromise. Greg loved the calligraphy on this leaf. The other side (in a different picture) has a touch of illumination as well.
